Anxiety doesn't always need a big intervention to ease. Alongside longer-term work in counselling, small daily practices can help bring your nervous system back to baseline. Here are three to try.
1. Slow, extended exhale breathing
Try breathing in for a count of four, and out for a count of six. A longer exhale than inhale gently signals to your body that it's safe to relax.
2. Naming what you notice
When anxious thoughts spiral, try grounding yourself by naming five things you can see, four you can hear, and three you can feel. It's a simple way to bring your attention back to the present.
3. A short walk outdoors
Even ten minutes outside — away from screens — can meaningfully lower stress levels. Nature doesn't need to be dramatic to be effective; a local park or quiet street works just as well.
These techniques can help in the moment, but if anxiety is a regular part of your life, it's worth exploring what's underneath it. That's exactly the kind of work we do together in sessions.
